5 out of 5 stars good book for learning the basics   March 22, 2006

this is a great book for learning the basics of the Hiragana alphabet, with sufficient study, this book can teach anyone how to read and write the (hiragana) alphabet within 2 weeks. obviously this book will not teach you japanese, its a book entirely focused on the alphabet of Hiragana (one of three japanese alphabets). if interested in learning how to read and write 'japanese' then this is probably the best book to begin with (certainly the best book i've seen) but be warned that in order to fully learn how to read and write japanese you will need to purchase the other books in the series (lets learn katakana, lets learn kanji). with that in mind, this is an excellent book for anyone starting out in japanese, the illustrations are clear and the book itself is very simple and easy to understand. there is little continuous prose, with most of the book literally being a step by step guide in how to write hiragana characters. well worth the price tag.

5 out of 5 stars Clear and simple basis for study   March 2, 2006

Very nice basic introduction to writing the hiragana characters. Explains some simple but fundamental aspects I've not seen in general beginner Japanese texts, such as the types of stroke ending used for each character. The layout reminds me of very early English handwriting-practice study workbooks from my infant school days! I do find I need extra practice beyond that provided for in the book, but the book provids a very firm foundation for that practice and the simple words are useful for building vocabulary as well as just learning the characters.

5 out of 5 stars best book to learn hiragana   February 11, 2006

This is the best place to start learning hiragana.

I was amazed of how easy it was to learn hiragana with this book. Once you finish reading the book and doing the exercises you should be able to remember all hiragana symbols.

5 out of 5 stars A great book to start   August 25, 2005

I think this is an excelent book to start learning japanese. The exercises really help you to memorize all the hiragana characters, and there is a lot of vocabulary in this book that you can take advantage of. For me it was excelent.

On the down side, they dont have a page with the correct answers for the exercises, but to be honest, I didn't feel like I needed them.

I'm looking forward for the "Let's learn Katakana", which I hope is as good as this one is.
