How to find where you are but maybe not if you are in the UK December 7, 2002 31 out of 32 found this review helpful
This book lives up to its sub title 'The Complete Guide to Staying Found' as it covers everything you need to know about .... well staying found. Explanations of maps, different types of compasses, GPS and how to tell time without a watch are all covered in some detail. For those with no prior knowledge (or at least very little) of the subject this is a good introduction to the areas you need to know about. The text is written in a straightforward manner and is sufficiently detailed to make the examples given very clear. This book however is aimed at the American market so the information about the type of maps is not valid for the UK and some of the compasses listed are not readily available. I also feel that although the book is illustrated throughout there is perhaps a lack of illustrative examples for the more complex aspects of navigation, which would back up the text. People with a good basic knowledge of navigation and staying found would perhaps find this a bit basic. None of these negatives really make it a bad book it's just that for navigating in the UK there are better books available.
reads in one sitting, wanting to go out hiking!! March 22, 1999 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I've read the book in one sitting, turning maps and terrain over and over in my head. The author makes the information clear and concise. It is clear that he is an experienced hiker in all kinds of terrains and conditions: desert and winter environments. It (the book) is a no-nonsense what you need to know instruction set. If you need to know how to use, or even what to buy in a compass, then this is the book that puts it down on paper in a way that you remember when you are out on the trail.
Good concise discussion on land navigation October 9, 1997 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Well written, well illustrated guide to general land navigation. Also teaches how-to navigate without a compass. Book includes a compass-on-a-card that can be carried in a wallet and used for survival situations. Excellent for beginners and intermmediate navigators. I liked the graphic illustrations and the illustrations of how to use a map with a compass. The only negative I found was the lack of mention that the magnetic declination changes each year. If you have an old map, the declination value can be off significantly.
