5 out of 5 stars Breaking the barrier of body language   June 17, 2008

My name is Gary Shane McGill and I am involved in the sale of patented ice cream, milkshake and smoothie systems. I picked this book because I wanted to enhance my perception with clients, since we can get so wound up with our beliefs systems that we might not realize what the other person might be thinking, so I have found that I can now see the signals to give me an indication about putting the client at ease.

You don't learn this kind of stuff at graduate school because this should be packed away as a Business Survival 101 essential requirement (at least in my opinion). It is far more than knowledge because it is about creating your own personal brand equity, which does not naturally come easy to us all, but by being more aware about what is going on we can hopefully inject our own business style to carry the day.

We all have plenty of room for professional improvement and I would highly recommend this book with a top review score. The layout is very good with the visuals and it has been written extremely well. In my opinion an essential part of your self-improvement shopping list for purchasing before you check out of this store.

4 out of 5 stars To the point   December 31, 2007

It dives straight into it - and it sticks to it all the way through. It contains a vast amount of practical advice and it is all well-served and easily applicable in everyday life. If you only read one book on body language let this be the one - it covers the subjects you really want mapped out by a book about body language. Also the tone is light and motivating.

3 out of 5 stars Not Much New for the Body Language-Savvy...   November 19, 2007

One good thing about this book is that it is easy to read; really! It is not couched in high-falutin psychological speak. The authors refer to a large number of academic studies on body language but still keep the book as "readable" as a Mills and Boons romance. Furthermore, the graphical illustrations are very helpful in driving the point home.

Even though I would like to think of myself as somewhat body language-literate, the book has heightened my awareness of sub-conscious cues that people give off during meetings or in groups. Most of what I read I already knew: That thick glasses make you look smarter, that bright red lipsticks are a no-go for business meetings and that a woman exposing her wrists to a man is a sign of (sexual) interest.

What I did not know was how to intervene in a situation when the body language of your conversation partner is not in your "favour". The book has some handy tips for shaking off or docking an aggressive (typically male) handshake or engaging an uninterested listener/audience during a presentation. Overall, it is a good read. It deserves my 3 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Essential but not particularly enjoyable reading   September 15, 2007

According to recent studies, only 30% of all communication is verbal. The other 70% is made up of the non verbal signals and gestures that come from the rest of the body (in other words body language). Assuming this to be true, it's therefore important for anyone interested in communicating effectively to fully understand the implications of body language and learn how to use it to effectively interact with all types of people.

The Definitve Book Of Body Language by Allan and Barbara Pease is the international bestseller on the subject of body language and therefore a good place to start. The first 100 pages of the book are great and a journey of discovery into the the world of body language, with every page revealing something new. Many of the points made are logical and obvious if thought about hard enough but it is still fascinating to read how the way we use our body in everyday situations can be interpreted and ultimately influence the outcome of our interactions with others.

The book uses a number of real life examples to highlight the points it makes, some of which provide a shocking insight into events and situations of the past 10 years. One example that springs to mind and thta is regularly referred to in the book is that of Bill Clinton when he was going through the scandal of his affair with Monica Lewinski. The book manages to pin point various moments during that time where the body language of the former US president communicated a resounding "I did it".

After the first 100 pages the book becomes a little bit repetitive and was more of an obligation than a pleasure to finish. Nevertheless I would still recommend it to anyone interested in communicating effectively, whether it be to better manage business situations or to attract more women. During the two weeks I was reading the book I became very ware of both my own and other people's body language and a number of the lessons taught in the book I still use on a regular basis.

4 out of 5 stars International bestseller for a reason!   July 26, 2007

This book is not only enlightening but quite funny! I laughed out loud on more than one occasion. Allan and Barbara Pease are very gifted writers, and their insight into human behaviour is fascinating. I can honestly say I have noticed far more about people's behaviour and my own body language since reading this book.
