We visited Boston in July 2004, the pop up map was ideal, small enough to fit in the pocket, no tricky folding needed, very durable, something like this is ideal, plenty of useful info and tourist info, well recommended as is Boston itself.

I've used the Los Angeles Pop-out map before, in late 2001, and found that to be incredibly useful. All the touristy things/places were clearly marked and so easy to find.
The Boston pop-out map is just as good. The main advantage being that is so much less-bulky than other tourist maps, but still carries all the important information. At the end of the day, it is much easier to stow this in a pocket than lug a heavy guide book round all day.
